Our History

Where else can you get finer barbeque than the city immortalized by the poet Carl Sandburg as the "Hog Butcher for the World"?

Chicago, the “Stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders,” is rich in diversity, passion and heritage—including a history as the capital of the meat packing industry, railroad hub, and key financial center for commodities trading and agricultural markets that dates all the way back to 1870.

Big Shoulders Barbeque is deeply rooted in that history.  Since the early 1930s our families have been dedicated to and worked in Chicago’s meat industry.  Over time, the giant meat packers have relocated away from the Chicago Union Stock Yards, but we have remained in Chicago. Today, our company is one of the few true Chicago family-owned meat businesses. And our knowledge and love of the business run as deep as our family ties to the city.

Authentic barbeque is about more than the sauce—it’s about the meat and how you select it and smoke it. With over 80 years of experience selling and preparing pork, we know ribs. We know how to choose 'em, cut 'em and smoke ‘em.

Although we recognize that regional preferences all deserve recognition, we are passionate about our Big Shoulders Chicago-Style Baby Back Ribs. Our savory baby backs are cooked low and slow for hours. They are hardwood smoked, meaty and tender, with a perfect balance of flavors.

At Farmington Foods, we always take the time and care to prepare the best products so that you can spend less time cooking and more quality time with your family and friends. Our ribs are good enough to rival any restaurant but easy to prepare at home.

When you bite into Big Shoulders Barbeque, you're not just getting a taste of authentic barbeque; you’re getting a taste of authentic Chicago.

Why We Love Ribs

Even thinking about naturally smoked, sauced and tender ribs stirs distinctive passions and emotions... It is the combined warm smell and taste of natural smoke and barbeque. It is the distinctive experience of enjoying ribs with family and friends.

It's often said that absence makes the heart grow fonder. We believe this feeling may be true for many "rib lovers." Long careful preparation often causes too much time to pass between enjoying ribs. Our product takes us from absence to loving ribs in 25 minutes!

Although the reasons for loving our ribs are as diverse as Chicago, some of our favorites are:

    1. Always ready
    2. A distinctive meal
    3. Serious fun
    4. Taste of the weekend
    5. Taste of home
    6. They're messy
    7. It's a party
    8. They're napkin endorsed
    9. Value
    10. We love ribs
